Introduction

Welcome, everyone. It’s great to have you all here. Special shoutout to Amy, joining us from Asheville.

It sounds like we have a mix of people here—some completely new to psychedelics and some with more experience. This is a perfect time to be having this conversation, whether you’re just learning or looking for a fresh perspective. Even for those with experience, keeping a beginner’s mindset is always valuable.

If any questions pop up during this talk, feel free to drop them in the chat. If I don’t have a slide for it, I’ll do my best to address it as we go.

About Me

My name is Josh, and I’m the founder of Brooklyn Balance LLC. I’m a psychedelic integration coach and facilitator with various certifications, including a 12-month program with TAM Integration, MAPS, and Psychedelic Support. I also work as a licensed facilitator in Oregon.

My personal journey with psychedelics began in 2003 with a life-changing experience. In 2008, after graduating college, I was laid off and started experiencing debilitating panic attacks—shortness of breath, stomach issues, headaches. I was prescribed SSRIs, which helped me function, but they didn’t address the root cause.

In 2016, I began tapering off SSRIs and exploring psychedelics for therapeutic purposes, with support from my therapist and community. Unlike recreational use, my focus was on intentional experiences for healing. By 2020, I had burned out working in film production. I needed a change, so I pivoted toward psychedelic integration and facilitation. Today, I run Brooklyn Balance, helping others through education, harm reduction, and personal support.

I’ve also built a strong community in New York City, and I feel incredibly grateful to be part of this work.

What is Psychedelic Integration?

Psychedelic integration is the process of preparing for, processing, and making meaningful changes after a psychedelic experience. Without integration, insights may be fleeting, emotions may remain unprocessed, and confusion can set in. With integration, we find clarity, transformation, and deeper self-awareness.

Key Elements of Integration:

  • Creating positive habits while shedding those that no longer serve us

  • Transformation: Releasing what holds us back and calling in what we want

  • Stabilizing after the journey to ensure insights become lasting change

  • Building community support to avoid isolation

  • Developing self-awareness for long-term transformation

The Integration Cycle:

  1. Preparation: Setting intentions, creating safety

  2. The Experience: The psychedelic journey itself

  3. Integration: Processing and applying insights

  4. Transformation: Living life differently as a result

Integration isn’t just about psychedelics. Think about major life transitions—moving, breakups, career changes. Those moments require integration too.

A Quick Reflection Exercise

  • If you’ve had a psychedelic experience: What’s a fear it helped you face?

  • If you haven’t had one: What’s a life-changing moment that was hard to integrate?

(Participants shared responses such as overcoming trauma, feeling more connected to their community, and finding clarity in life’s direction.)

Mindset & Readiness

Integration starts with how we approach the experience. Here are some key elements:

  • Questions vs. Answers: We don’t always need immediate answers—sometimes, just asking the right questions is enough.

  • Meditation, Breathwork, Shadow Work: These help in preparation and integration.

  • Building Trust: Whether working with a facilitator or a group, trust is vital.

  • Education & Harm Reduction: The more informed you are, the safer and more meaningful the experience will be.

Recent studies show that proper preparation reduces adverse experiences and enhances positive outcomes.

Preparing for Your Experience

  • Consent & Boundaries: What are your personal boundaries? What does consent look like for you and others?

  • Screening & Vetting: Who are you working with? What’s their experience?

  • Substance Safety: Know your dose, test your substances (DanceSafe.org is a great resource), and understand any contraindications.

Contraindications to be aware of:

  • Mental health risks: Conditions like schizophrenia or BPD can make psychedelic experiences riskier.

  • HPPD (Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder): Rare, but possible.

  • Medical risks: Lithium + psychedelics can induce seizures.

The Hero’s Journey & Psychedelics

Many people describe their psychedelic experiences as mirroring the Hero’s Journey:

  1. Call to Adventure – The desire for change

  2. Meeting Mentors & Teachers – Learning from guides

  3. Challenges & Temptations – Facing internal obstacles

  4. Death & Rebirth – The breakthrough moment

  5. Transformation & Return – Bringing insights back into daily life

Finding the Right Facilitator or Group

Green Flags:

✔ Experience & Education
✔ Proper Screening & Vetting
✔ No False Promises (e.g., “10 years of therapy in one night”)
✔ Emphasis on Preparation & Integration
✔ Ethical Handling of Consent & Power Dynamics

Red Flags:

❌ No Screening or Preparation
❌ Guru Complex (“I have all the answers”)
❌ Lack of Medical or Psychological Awareness
❌ Disrespecting Boundaries

A good facilitator empowers and supports your journey, rather than dictating it.

Post-Ceremony Care

  • Move Slowly & Mindfully

  • Avoid Impulsive Decisions (Don’t quit your job or move to the jungle overnight!)

  • Connect with Support Systems

  • Practice Stillness & Reflection

Deeper Processing:

  • What emotions and sensations arose?

  • What symbolic imagery or insights appeared?

  • What life changes are you considering?

  • How can you practice gratitude daily?

Clinical vs. Traditional Psychedelic Use

Clinical SettingTraditional/Spiritual SettingDoctor, TherapistShaman, Healer, GuideFocuses on DiagnosisHolistic Healing ApproachData & Research-BasedCommunity & Oral Tradition

Each has its place, and both are shaping the future of psychedelics.

Turning Insights into Action

  1. Identify the core message of your experience.

  2. Make it tangible. How does it show up in your daily life?

  3. Take small, actionable steps. One change at a time.

  4. Reflect & adjust. Keep refining as you grow.

The real work happens between experiences. Psychedelics aren’t magic—they’re tools. The transformation comes from what you do afterward.
